Taking a gap year before going on to university has been an increasing trend among young people in recent years. Although there are some drawbacks, I personally think that the benefits are much more considerable.
On the one hand, taking some time off for travel and work before starting university life may discourage some students from continuing their study later on. In particular, after a relaxing period of time, students may find it difficult and dispirited to return to the academic environment filled with high expectations and pressure. Those who spend time working after high school might also have a tendency to find the work environment more financially appealing and less strenuous, as opposed to having to deal with school assignments. Because of this, these school leavers are much less likely to continue to higher education and start working instead.
However, the gains from a gap year are much weightier. In some countries such as Vietnam, the majority of high school students are clueless about the major of study to pursue. Such a problem could be solved if high school leavers have one year off dedicated to travelling and new experiences, which enables them to explore their fields of interest to make a wise educational decision. Besides, those taking a gap year can enjoy an advantage over their peers with problem-solving and task management skills, which may be enhanced through such experiences. These skills are of great benefits to their higher education pursuits, enabling faster and more effective learning.
In conclusion, despite the disadvantages relating to educational interruption, I am strongly of the belief that the benefits in terms of academic orientation and skill development are much weightier. Therefore, high school students should be encouraged to take a year off if they wish.
